Help Us Find You: Address Signs & Emergency Access

When you call 911, emergency responders need to locate your property and reach you quickly. Clearly displayed address numbers and accessible driveways help firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and law enforcement find you when every moment matters.

Display Your 911 Address

Walton County’s E9-1-1 Addressing Ordinance No. 2006-17 requires owners or occupants to display and maintain their assigned address numbers conspicuously on the structure.

The ordinance provides that:

  • Address numbers must be at least 3 inches tall and contrast with their background.
  • Numbers should be displayed near the front door, entrance, or another conspicuous location on the structure.
  • When a structure is more than 50 feet from the edge of the road right-of-way, an additional number at the property line beside the access drive is recommended.
  • Numbers posted at that roadside location must be reflective.
  • Commercial address numbers must appear on the building and the business sign in front of the building or shopping center.

Other applicable building or fire codes may require larger numbers or additional identification.

Make Your Address Easy to See

Liberty Fire District recommends that you:

  • Check whether your address is visible from the road during daylight and after dark.
  • Keep numbers clear of shrubs, branches, decorations, and parked vehicles.
  • Replace faded, damaged, or missing numbers.
  • Use larger reflective numbers where distance makes the address difficult to read.
  • Clearly identify individual homes along shared driveways.
  • Avoid relying only on a mailbox located across the road or away from your driveway.

Free Reflective Address Signs

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office “Sign Up, Stand Out” program provides and installs free reflective 911 address signs for Walton County residents.

Residents may submit a request through the Sheriff’s Office website. A representative will contact you to arrange installation.

Keep Driveways Accessible

Fire trucks and rescue vehicles need more space than passenger vehicles. Narrow driveways, low branches, parked vehicles, and blocked entrances can delay emergency access.

To help responders reach your property:

  • Trim vegetation that obstructs the driveway or hangs over the travel path.
  • Keep entrances and travel routes clear of vehicles, trailers, equipment, and debris.
  • Maintain driveway surfaces so emergency vehicles can travel safely.
  • Keep existing turnaround areas available.
  • Contact the District about access concerns involving narrow entrances, bridges, culverts, or long driveways.

These are general safety recommendations. Required access dimensions and construction standards depend on the property and applicable codes. Contact the District before designing or modifying emergency access.

Gates and Locked Entrances

If your property has a locked or powered gate, contact Liberty Fire District in advance to discuss emergency access arrangements.

Let us know about changes to your gate or access system. Do not assume responders have a working access method.

Do not include gate codes or other security credentials in an initial email or website form. Ask District staff how to coordinate access information.

Verify Your Assigned Address
